who doesn’t like dismantling barbies? not me.
floating femmes
barbie legs, dental floss, plastic bags, flowers, wrapping paper, shoebox
in which spring-skirt clad legs float in mid-air.
this diorama dedicated to F Scott Fitzgerald and his novel, The Great Gatsby. this is one of my fav books to reread. this diorama depicts the scene when nick first encounters daisy and jordan. they appear to him to be floating above their divans, bouyed by their carefreedom.
a little note, a dedication of sorts. a dear friend, whom i would call a muse if only he were a chick, so let’s call him a bard — fairly adamantly shot down a lame idea i had for a project. if not for his laying that idea to rest (at least until it is inspired with the same spark as these dioramas), there might be no floating femmes. so, sheeeyit, thanks bard. and i’ll add a muthafuckah so the ignorant a-holes hear me.
on materials: having the chance to spend this much time in my dad’s house, i am realizing that there is a lot of stuff in the house that has not been used for decades. the barbies are just some of this category of item. the legs in the long white skirt with pink petals are discolored, possibly from spending years in the attic, subject to a harsh unregulated climate. i found a bag of awesome toy cars with moving parts and little dude action figures that sit inside of them and then i remembered being a kid and thinking, “this is an awesome toy car with moving parts and little dude action figures.” i am not sure that i can bring myself to dismantle them for incorporation in a diorama. i do not feel i could claim the diorama as my own work if i did not mod the premade things i put in them. sis always liked the barbies more than i did, and i got her approval before removing the legs.

beautiful. i’ve been loving your pieces and resisting the urge to ask where the process of creation leads next; if the muse just needs some airtime or if this may turn into professional work of some sort. so much art killed by ambition.
you were missed at alchemy. these photos would have added to the event…
thanks nagu!
mostly i’m just making these for entertainment! i’m building a few that are collaborations of a kind with people i know instead of with books i’ve read, and this is even more entertaining for me. hoping to keep making stuff and having it be fun and social. hoping too that other people will share their stuff if inspired.
