who doesn’t like making dioramas? not me. as a reward for finishing a book and as a way expressing a little of what a book has brought to my life, i am making dioramas. this is the first.
free range egg
mixed media and hard boiled egg
in which an egg leaves planet earth, on a rocket.
dedicated to Michael Pollen and his The Omnivore’s Dilema, a book about food production and consumption in modern u.s. society. through michael pollen’s examination of industrial food production, organic and small-scale food production, and hunting/gathering/cooking, we begin to understand the ways in which our industrial food chain does not serve human health.
more about this diorama
sustainability: i am seeking to make these dioramas out of only recyclable or reusable parts; after shooting “free range egg, a diorama”, i returned all reusable parts (rubber bands) to circulation in the house and all recyclable parts (cardboard, bottle) to the recycling bins, and had intended to eat the egg, but did not.
scale: i conceived of “free range egg, a diorama” as a shoebox diorama, but when i started to shoot it, i realized i needed a larger space. so i tried the oven. this may be a great location for future dioramas, but ultimately, i moved egg, earth, and rocket to a closet and shot there on a black coat. space, afterall, is black.
subject matter: i am anticipating wanting to make dioramas faster than i can read books. i will either satisfy this desire by making dioramas of other subjects — perhaps current events, slang, classic math word problems — or i will explore other types of crafts and will maintain dioramas for books i read.
